Have just completed the new book “Young Trudeau” by the Nemnis. I have to give a talk on it next week.
A most remarkable book. It is clear from his own writings that Trudeau was a kind of revolutionary who belonged to a secret group plotting for a separate French Catholic Quebec. Much of this came from his Jesuit teachers at Brebeuf and from Lionel Groulx who also poured some anti=semitism into the brew.
I suppose one could argue that Trudeau deserves a lot of credit because in his later more mature life he overcame this political and cultrual baggage that was so characteristic of the Quebec in which he grew up in the thirties and early forties – a Quebec that admired most of the Catholic fascist states such as Italy, Portugal and Spain.
