Tuesday night I saw the most remarkable documentary on PBS about the origins of the Iraq war. Never before have the strands been outlined with such clarity.
Rumsfeld just wore the generals down. When they insisted upon more troops he insisted they were wrong. Finally, no one including General Franks, had the guts to tell him he was wrong as subsequent events in Irag have amply proved.
When Bush and Cheney partially failed to get the CIA to tailor the intelligence to fit their war policy, Cheney set up his own intelligence apparatus in the Vice-President’s office.
The result of this willfull incompetence is the quagmire we now have in Iraq.
