What has happened to those pedophile priests who have not been convicted of anything? Some of them are still supported financially by the Church but they are denied any public practise of their vocation?
Cardinal Edward Egan in New York, usually considered a hard line conservative, has come up with a plan. Such rogue priests must agree to indefinte therapy and to living in an enclosed space, such as a monastery or retreat house, or they must quit the priesthood and the diocesan payroll. In five of the first seven cases adjudicated the rogue priest decided to leave the priesthood. Who, if anyone keeps surveillance on them? If the official Church abdicates responsibilty, then it would seem the secular authorities should take up the slack. Otherwise these defrocked men may again fall through the cracks to prey on our children.
