In the end they managed to turn Saddam Hussein’s execution into an act of savagery through the use of video.  The Vatican condemned the footage as a « spectacle » violating human rights.  Now Saddam’s Sunni comrades are rampaging through Iraq in protest.  Is there anyone who still would argue this barbarous act did more good than harm? Did the executed not bear himself with more decorum than the executioners?

I’ve added your feed to Opinions Canada, a new Canadian blogs aggregator that I’ve launched:

I hope that’s okay. IF you have any objections, contact me at

I figure a guy like you who’s been in the public eye and likes opinions probably wouldn’t mind.

No doubt unintentionally, the exposure of many Americans to the brutality of capital punishment may turn the tide in favour of its abolition in the USA. How ironic if that were to happen!

    Hi Mr. McKenty,

I found your blog via Suzanne’s blogroll. Just have to say that as a student, I loved your biography of Mitch Hepburn. I used it extensively last year in a political history class.

I wish the Vatican would cease espousing on Muslin affairs, especially in the area of human rights which history has shown that they have totally misread the rules for justice.

On the other hand, give me enough time to seek out the mothers whose children were slaughtered by that beast, and ask them if there was any decorum in play when the carnage was going on in their village streets right out there in public view. Has anyone seen pictures of Hussain inspecting the dirty work he did to the Kurds. I don’t expect the mothers to have the same views as the rest of us civilized people. So who’s right? What about an eye for an eye.I’m sure the mothers would have turned the other cheek if only they had been given a chance to do so. Yeah.

Yeah the Vatican should just shut up and not use its huge influence to lead people down the right path. [/sarcasm]

No large institution or group of people with the lifespan of the Catholic Church– or even of a country like Canada– is not without moral flaws.
