In a few months there will be a by-election in the solid Liberal riding of Outremont.  A number of Liberal heavyweights have shown interest and there is speculation that Justin Trudeau is thinking about running for the Liberal nomination.  There is considerable opposition among many Liberals to Trudeau — too young, too inexperienced, no real credentials.  It is remoured that Dion is not keen on Trudeau’s running this time.  One of Trudeau’s Liberal colleagues said this:  « Justin inherited his mother’s artistic talents but not his father’s cerebral abilities. »  Ouch!   Other than his fathert’s last name (which is probably not a political asset in Quebec) I really don’t see what Justin Trudeau has to offer at this time in the political arena.

You might be right. Look at who they elected in the states for president.

The fact is that he HAS inherited his father’s cerebral abilities, whether that be a good thing or otherwise.

I’m not sure Dion really has a choice as far as young Trudeau is concerned. I suspect he came as part of the Gerard Kennedy package.

Besides, in this day and age, every political party needs its thinkers and its lookers. It’s not easy to get both in one (although it appears Barack Obama is shaping up to be an exception).

Justin Trudeau can draw media attention in a way that unfortunately a good idea seldom can. I think Dion would be well advised to find him a spot somewhere, if not in Outremont.

Anyone who saw Justin work the Liberal convention can see he has royal jelly. IF, and its a big IF, he wins the nomination, all Dion has to do is unleash Trudeau on the campaign trail in British Columbia and Alberta, set Kennedy loose in Ontario, and count votes..Since when has politics been about substance. Its about style, and whatever you think of Trudeau lite, he’s got plenty of that.

The Trudeau name is probably not a political asset in Quebec huh? Perhaps you’ve forgotten that Pierre Trudeau holds the record for winning more seats in Quebec than anyone else? 74 out of 75 seats in 1980 and 68% of the popular vote. No other PM has ever done that and the best the BQ has ever done is 54 seats and 49% of the popular vote.

Justin Trudeau, the last name aside, is the most refreshing hint of excitement to an otherwise nauseating old-school political arena.
