Tonight at nine, the PBS program Frontline is running a program called HAND OF GOD about the sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church.  I wonder if it will touch on one of the most curious elements of this whole affair:  the fact that so many priests have been censured and that practically no bishops have paid any price for the cover-up.  The priests are out in the cold and the bishops are in their palaces.

    Barbara Says:

I watched the documentary and was deeply touched by what the family went through. I was even more horrified (but not surprised) at the callous treatment they underwent at the hands of the hierarchy. If I were looking to find Jesus in the Boston area, I’d be looking in that kitchen in Salem where Momma would be fixing a pot of pasta to share with him. I certainly wouldn’t expect him to be sharing a meal with some of those old boys in Roman collars. I feel so sorry for the good priests in Boston and everywhere.

    Paul Geraghty Says:

Like Barbara I was also deeply moved by this documentary which « told it as it was » with no added drama necessary. There are aspects of our church that are deeply sick – I am not naive enough to think the issues have gone away. One of the saddest things is that good people feel they have to defend the church that – in some but by nomeans all of its leaders – has so deeply compromised its ability to witness to gospel truth. The fact that McCormack and Lennon are Bishops today sickens me.

It is perhaps worth noting, Paul, that the infamour McCormack avoided jail by a whisker when he made a somewhat questionable deal with the District Attorney in New Hampshire.

    Sharon Says:

I too watched the program and was saddened by what the whole family had to endure for so many years. I was especially horrified at the way that it had been covered up for so many years.

    jim Says:

The hand of God? What about the face of God? Did I see it in the priest who signalled with his thumb to a parishner
to leave the mass and get out of the church or else? Did I see it in the face of the Bishop who « stared » down a parishner at a mass who the Bishop didn’t particularly care for? Well, if they weren’t representing God, what were they doing there? It may be that when God invented Satan he brought him back to St.Mary’s and put Satan’s face on the clergy there so God could show the world what is happening to the church.
