According to reports in the Daily Telegraph this morning, Tony Blair will announce after he leaves office next week that he will convert from Anglican to Roman Catholic.  No surpise there.  He has been attending Mass with his family (who are all Catholic) for years.  In fact, Pope John Paul 11, gave him communion at a private mass at the Vatican.  I guess the Vatican thinks that is ok for the high and the mighty but nor for the hoi polloi.

Perhaps Benedict will make Blair a lay Cardinal and appoint him a roving ambassador for the Church.  Stranger things have happened.

    Barbara Says:

From what I have read, the likelihood of his becoming a permanent deacon is slim.
The previous pope tended to follow his own rules at the same time that he tightened them up for others. I read the Cardinal Hume had requested that Blair not receive communion when he attended Mass.
Frankly, I believe it is easier for ordinary folk to slip into the communion line than it is for those in the public eye.

I think, Barbara, all you say is correct. I would expect Blair to quietly begin instructions, probably with that high profile priest at Westminister Cathedral, and slip into the Communion line behind Cherie and the children. Apparently he wanted to do it earlier but couldn’t because as PM he appointed Anglican bishops and that would have created some kind of conflict.

    Barbara Says:

Also, I hear, it might have created conflict since his party is in favour gay marriage and liberalizing abortion legislation.

    SUZANNE Says:

I read in today’s paper that the Pope gave Blair a diplomatic dressing down in response to the reports of his impending conversion.

I guess his first stop will be the confessional. He may have a few things (places) on his mind.
