Yesterday in a Chicago court room Judge Amy St. Eve refused to permit  Conrad Black to return to Canada to await his sentencing on November 30.  She said she would again at the matter if Black could beef up his 21 million dollar bail.  Black’s lawyers say all his assets are frozen. The prosecutors say he has upwards of 60 million stashed in off shore account. So far as I am aware the prosecutors have offered no proff of this.

A poll shows that 69% of Canadians feel Black should serve at least one year behind bars.  61% think his Order of Canada should be rovoked.  A majority of Canadians think he should erve between one and nine years.  The prosecutors are asking for 15 to 20 years.

Do you think Black should serve less than five years or more than five years?

If he can raise more bail should he be allowed to return to Canada?  He has a temporary visa which runs out Nov. 27 but could be extended.

Do you believe Black should be able to serve his sentence in Canada where he would serve about a sixth of the sentnce as opposed to serving 85% of his sentence in a tough US federal prison.

How is society served by throwing the book at Black?

I don’t believe for a minute that Black is out of money or that all his assets are frozen.
He should do his time in a US jail NOT in Canada nor should he be allowed to return to Canada on a visa. He will refuse to go back to Chicago and then Canadians will be on the hook for an entire extradition procedure.
I do think that 15 to 20 years is a little too excessive but 1 year is not long enough. He committed the offences, he should take responsibility for his actions and should be required to pay for his crime in the jurisdiction in which he was convicted.

In the US, Bushies and celebrities get away with murder. However, they become pariahs because the people have made their judgement. They are no longer completely free. In Canada, it is the wealthy business folk who get away with it and the common people pay the price –cf Bre-X. They move someplace faraway and exotic and live off their spoils.
You do the crime, you do the time. Something between 5 and 10 years, I suspect, with possibility of parole if he behaves himself at Hotel Fed. His crime was more blatant than Martha’s.

I do not feel that 15 – 20 years is excessive. If he is given 20 years he will be out in under five. Besides a Federal Prison for the important in the US does not compare to the facilities that the common man is put in.

It is time to say NO to this new generation of Robber Barons, and put this thief away. Someone told me if you are going to steal, steal big, the big thief is lauded for his/her ingenuity and creativity. The small thief is sent to prison.

Remember George Bush defrauded his stockholders of 25 million with inside trading and Martha Stewart is sent away for a couple of thousand.

    Hi Jason,

If Black is sentenced to 20 years in the U.S. prison system, the law says he must serve 85% of his time.

Thanks Neil, It used to be a lot less, but I don’t doubt there is now an 85% serving time. That may explain why about 2 million people are in Jail.

Black has been driven by greed since school days . He should not be allowed back in Canada as I am convinced he would fight a return to US for sentacing , 10 years in jail seems fair to me .
