Tomorrow in a Toronto courtroom a judge will decide whether Karlheinz Schreiber should remain in Canada or be extradited to Germany where he is wanted on a multiplicity of charges including fraud and tax evasion.

For almost eight years government lawyers have been trying to get rid of Schreiber. But there is now a new element in the equation. It involves Brian Mulroney and his relationship with the German businessman. Schreiber has sworn that he paid $300,00 to Mulroney for services that are still not clear. Stephen Harper has announced there will be a full-scale judicial inquiry into the Schreiber-Mulroney matter including the two million dollar settlement the Canadian government made with Mulroney over the Airbus affair in which Schreiber was involved.

It would be a farce, would it not, to launch a multi-million dollar inquiry into the Schreiber-Mulroney affair while one of the principles is languishing in a German jail.

I think federal lawyers should show up in the Toronto court tomorrow and withdraw their demand for Schreiber’s extradition at least until the judicial inquiry is completed.

Do you agree?

    SUZANNE Says:

Why is former Trudeau-era Minister Marc Lalonde posting bail for Schreiber?

Personally, I think this whole issue is a tempest in a teapot. It looks like Schreiber is orchestrating this to avoid charges in Germany.

    Cate McB Says:

If this issue was a tempest in a teapot, it would have died down long ago.

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, & I think the fire should be investigated fully.

So I agree with you Neil, I think the demand for Schreiber’s extradition should be withdrawn, at least until the judicial inquiry is over.

And maybe Marc Lalonde knows something important that will become clear to everyone during the judicial inquiry.

    Barbara Says:

What puzzles me is the millions that will be spent on this inquiry, not to mention keeping Schreiber in Canada, over $300,000 allegedly given by Schreiber to Mulroney.

I am no fan of Mulroney, but I can’t help but wonder if Schreiber is pulling someone’s chain.

This is going to be a tempest allright but not in a teapot. I also noticed that Marc Lalonde made bail for Schreiber and found it curious. However, I knew Lalonde quite well some years ago. I would stake my life that he is not involved in something shady.
There are a couple of things here that have the potential to blow some people in high places out of the water.
Some years ago Mulroney testified under oath that he might have met Schreiber a couple of times for coffee. And we now know for a fact thast Mulroney accepted $300,000 from Schreiber. NO one has ever explained what for. As Barbara says, this will be a very expensive inquiry but it’s gone too far to be stopped now.

    Paul Costopoulos Says:

Yesterday on Radio-Canada, former judge Gomery said that indeed such an inquiry is the only, albeit expensive, way to get at the truth in such matters. What bothers me however is the fact that we are confronted to a pack of liars ready to swear anything to save their precious hides.
Let’s hope we have some Coffins to open the box of truthfulness a not too many Lafleurs…which I fear will be quite amnesiacs.

Wtihout Schreiber , it will be like Black without Radler,a conviction will not be possible,so this witness must be present if the inquiry is to be believed. And that is the main point, whether or not the inquiry is real with the appointment of President Johnson from UW. Never mind when he was prinicpal for a Quebec university he was involved in the wrongful firing of a prof who refused to lower standards but more importantly he was chosen to replace Douglas Wright who was Mulroney’s Education Advisor , and that Trevor Eyton a governor at UW was made a Canadian Senator by PM Mulroney. UW and these people represent the present day Family Compact/Chateau Clique, the businesses that run the country , not the elected politicians. And you must be aware that PM Harper has visited UW several times since elected, allegedly courting these power brokers to back his government, people who had previously backed the Liberals. Will it be fair to have a « fox » heading a committee to set the rules to determine if another brother fox raided the hen house? What I know from my dealings with UW and PM Mulroney (see reply from Jeff Foster , personal assistant to Mulroney on my website, « the PM is aware of your situtation) that they act to cover up fraud. I am preparing letters to re-open the criminal investigation of UW for scholarship fraud and research suppression for PM Harper , the OPP and the DOJ (see website). So from personal experience(including former Justice and Health Minister Alan Rock),you must have the witness with the « goods » and a very open inquiry if the truth is to be told. Otherwise it will just be another cover up,like Westray and Somalia. thank you. E.A.Greenhalgh
