SHOULD AN ANTI-GAY M.P. BE EXPELLED?

Seventeen years ago at a convivial political party, Tom Lukiwski made derogotary remarks about gays. He referred to them as “homosexual faggots with dirt under their fingers who spread diseases.”

NDP officials in Saskatchewan just discovered the tape and handed it to the media. Mr. Lukiwski, now a conservative member of parliament in Ottawa, immediately apologized profusely for his remarks and said they no longer represented his thinking on gays.`

However the Opposition Liberals want Mr. Harper to boot Mr. Lukiwski out of the Conservative caucus.

Perhaps this would make sense if the anti-gay remarks had been made more recently. But 17 years ago. And I accept Mr. Lukiwski’s apology that he has changed his mind about gays. Much has changed in society’s attitude to gays. The same person who told a gay joke in 1991 may find himself a welcome guest at a same-sex wedding in 2008.

Do you think Mr. Lukiwski should be expelled from the Conservative caucus for anti-gay remarks he made 17 years ago?

    Att . Paul Costopoulos –

Hi Paul. We are missing your informed comments. Hope we can welcome you back soon. Neil

    Cornelius T. Zen Says:

No. He apologized. He has expressed a more enlightened viewpoint. He has clarified that his remarks, expressed 17 years ago, reflected his viewpoint, 17 years ago. It’s the mature and gracious thing to do.
Hmmm…he apologized, he regrets trashing gays, he says that’s not his viewpoint anymore… HEY! HARPER! THROW THE BUM OUT! HE’S NOT A TRUE HARPERCRAT ANYMORE! SEND HIM PACKING, LIKE THOSE TRAITORS TURNER AND WHATHISFACE FROM NOVA SCOTIA! HOW DARE HE SHOW CIVILIZED BEHAVIOUR! HOW DARE HE DO THE GRACIOUS AND MATURE THING! HE DON’T BELONG IN THE CONSERVATIVE CAUCUS! THROW HIM OUT! NOW!!! (Ya think? Or do ya?) CTZen

    Tony Kondaks Says:

    This is a non-issue.

Pierre Trudeau rode around Montreal on his motorcycle with a Nazi helmet on during WWII.

The current President Pro Tempere of the United States Senate and senior senator from West Virginia, Robert Bird, joined the Ku Klux Klan in 1942 and said things that would make Lukiwski look like Mother Theresa by comparison.

    And on and on.

They’ve all apologized. They’ve all evolved.

17 years ago? Heck, I’ve said things 17 days ago that I regret.

    Joe Agnost Says:

I agree with the others… let it go and move on. Lot’s of people felt the same way about gays 17 years ago – the point is that he knows it was wrong and he says he’s changed.

    Paul Costopoulos Says:

On this last one, I agree with the comments already proferred. If we all were to be condemned for remarks passed 17 or 20 or 30 years ago, we would all be in the dog house.
As for my absence Neil, I was digesting. Guess the worst of the stomach aches are now over.

The Conservatives need him to win votes from people in western Canada. They’re all like that now! Anyone who is surprised probably voted for them. Duh!

    SUZANNE Says:

This is such a contrived scandal. We know that the progressives say all kind of nasty things about Christians when they’re not looking.

    Gimme a break.

The NDP are losers for having brought this contrived (as Suzanne puts it) stupidity up. GO…TO…WORK.

    Chimera Says:

LOL! I love this “just discovered” tape the NDP came up with! What’s Lukiwski up to that the NDP are afraid of him and suddenly feel the need to discredit him? Seventeen years ago? Good Grief, Lucy!

I pay more attention to what a person does than to what he says, especially when politics are involved.

He says he’s evolved. I hope so. And if it’s true, we should be able to find evidence of his evolution, no?

And refraining from telling gay jokes isn’t evolution…like anti-gay statements, it’s social fear. Gays tell gay jokes! Good ones.

But kick him out of caucus for a remark made seventeen years ago, when the caucus didn’t exist? No.

Kick him out for not living up to his current statement that he has changed for the better? Stay tuned.
