Seventeen years ago at a convivial political party, Tom Lukiwski made derogotary remarks about gays. He referred to them as “homosexual faggots with dirt under their fingers who spread diseases.”
NDP officials in Saskatchewan just discovered the tape and handed it to the media. Mr. Lukiwski, now a conservative member of parliament in Ottawa, immediately apologized profusely for his remarks and said they no longer represented his thinking on gays.`
However the Opposition Liberals want Mr. Harper to boot Mr. Lukiwski out of the Conservative caucus.
Perhaps this would make sense if the anti-gay remarks had been made more recently. But 17 years ago. And I accept Mr. Lukiwski’s apology that he has changed his mind about gays. Much has changed in society’s attitude to gays. The same person who told a gay joke in 1991 may find himself a welcome guest at a same-sex wedding in 2008.
Do you think Mr. Lukiwski should be expelled from the Conservative caucus for anti-gay remarks he made 17 years ago?
